Big stay at home d that isnt hugely mobile..... meh. Would of liked someone who could move the puck a little better. Cost us a 2nd round pick.... not hugely sure how i feel about the price but it could be worse. I still feel like another trade might be coming (ignoring the volchenkov scenario). We have donovan and foligno out with a full roster and brian lee is still here

Not sure how i feel about this. He is a -3 on the NYI which means he is atleast responsible on the defensive part of the ice. I hear he is pretty much Hal Gill without the shot blocking. I must agree with Phlax, hoping this is not the only move Murray is planning on making.

Just read a blog with their view on the trade. He has 153 blocked shots second only to seidenberg in the nhl. Also at 155 hits... pretty nice numbers and his +/- is ok considering his team history. Good for a stay at home guy shame he doesnt have a more offensive up side though.

Just checked a few other stats for sutton, 54 games played, 155 hits , 153 blocked shots, 51 give aways (currently only 2 senators have more than 50 give aways Phillips - 60, and Kovalev - 58)
Seems like a solid pick up, i would prefer Volchenkov and hopefully Sutton can continue to block shots like a mad man, leading Volchenkov by 16 right now, i think the 2 together will be ridiculous on the PK and 5v5.

Reading the odd forum and people seem pretty down on this trade. People seem to forget that bar any trades he replaces campoli in the lineup....... Campoli isnt great defensively and apart from two games this season he hasnt generated any significant offence

If we can package campoli and Lee to pick up another top 6 D i think we are set.

ok trade. he's the solid stay at home guy we need but he's a UFA. if they don't re-sign him, that's a steep price. if they do, i'm fine with it. but that's the going rate for these guys.
plus, this puts a little pressure on A-train and his agent now.
still have too many forwards though but sounds like Murray is done.

Thought i would pose something to you guys. Is sutton a stay at home d insurance incase we have no choice but to trade volchie? Murrays comments on team 1200 seem to be somewhat of a tactical move on his behalf. With the aqcuisition of another d who plays a style similar to volchenkov has murray put pressure on him and his agent to try and get something done?

anyways, i guess my concern now is are they too big and slow? karlson and Campoli are the only good skaters back there now and campoli is likely to be the odd man out. whatever, they'll be friggin' tough!

I think it was a solid move for depth on the D.
1) We now have 4 stay at home type defenders, which helps with Carkner's frequent excursions to the box.
2) We now have a second shot blocker to put out on the 2nd PK unit.
3) It puts pressure on Volchenkov to resign by showing that the team is capable of going out and trying to find a replacement for him.
4) The price was going to be a 2nd round pick or higher for a defenseman anyways, blame Pittsburgh and Nashville for that.
5) Giving up SJ's late second round pick in a draft in which the talent pool falls off dramatically after the 1st round is really not that bad of a price after all.

as a person that suffers witha speach impediment...I always pull for Murray in a weird way..as his accomplishments are one foot forward and avoice for a community of people that suffer daily....but htis isnt a good move...did not make this team better at all!

Smart trade - gives Murray options in case Volchie is adios.
2nd rounder - SAN JOSE's (like already said) is NOT a high price to pay for a solid veteran that brings good dimensions on the back end.
Seems like this is becoming more and more of a Brian Murray-type team.
As far as "moving the puck" - all you need to do is PASS it. You don't need to necessarily skate it out to centre ice/offensive blue line ala Joe Corvo. Have you been watching Snes games at all? We hammer it up the boards and out - no skating it out. I am sure Sutton can win a few battles along the boards and pass the puck out.
All in all - thumbs up on the trade.

San Jose started w the 2nd round picks when they traded for Niklas Wallin from Carolina about 3 weeks ago.
Since it's the Sharks pick late in 2nd I guess it's all right but as far as putting pressure on ATrain don't think he cares one way
or the other this may be his last chance at a big payday and he's going to take advantage of it. There's always the Russian
league for him too.

Seems like Murray is gonna wait for the summer :(( We may have another Chris Neil situation where we see Volchenkov testing the waters and realizing 500,000 is not worth packing up and moving to a new city when you have it nice at home.
OR it is more likely we lose Volchenkov for nothing this summer
I saw trade him if you get a 1st rounder and anything else is gravy.
Bottom line: Murray's gotta take a stand against over inflated contracts.
