Sens Underground Forums > Aaron Ward TRADED for Kelly, 3rd round pick

Nope, but made you look. And Russell's heart skipped a beat.
Wonder if we'll pull off any trades for a D-man or two before the deadline. I am not expecting anything big, if even. We seem to really need another D, but I don't think Murray wants to shake the chemistry

don't even JOKE about that!

muraay is on the radio right now, says he's looking for a 5-6 guy. doesn't want to mess with the top 4, that includes Kuba.

wow! murray said he's nowhere with the A-Train contract. not happy with what he's hearing from his agent and would not rule out moving him before the trade deadline..

YIKES!

I don't like the sounds of that. Volchenkov needs to be resigned at almost any cost. Whatever his value is on the market...it does not reflect his value to this team. Our defense starts with A-Train.

Canuck.... u crazy!!

I wouldn't mind seeing Volchenkov get moved for a nice return. Let's NOT overpay for another player on this team. He HAS to take a hometown discount or he's gone.

Volchenckov cons: he screens own goalie; not a great shot or passer; not fast; not great positionally
pros: fearless; physical; big body presence (thank you Mcguire); blocks shots; experience

I don't see A-train being traded because our blue line is thin as it is, UNLESS a similar type player/prospect is coming back in the deal.
Although, he could be packaged. Who knows... possibilities are endless if GMs get creative.

First of all, Canuck, you're a bastard :)

Second, i think volch is as good as gone. I for one, DO NOT want to see us break the bank for him. Verg is right, he has some major cons, and i feel like we've already seen the best that his game has to offer.

Be very careful Murray....

I don't know what he's asking for, but another con against A-Train is that the way he plays, eventually his body will break down. He's not the kind of guy a team wants to get stuck with a 7-8 year $7M/year deal if there's a chance he'll be injured for 1/2 of it. I'm guessing that the agent is looking for a long term deal because of A-Train's style of play.

I heard Murry's comments on the air yesterday about Volchenkov... and it took me by surprise as well. I knew he was an UFA, but I hadn't heard anything or put any thought into it.

It's a little disappointing to think about to be honest. I agree that I don't think we should put out another silly contract (Heatley, Spezza, Redden, etc.) to keep him. There are plenty of D-men in the league. We have him until the end of the year, and we're having a run right now. Next season is a new season. I hope he stays, but I hope he stays in a way that doesn't see a cap hit of more than $4M/season.

Let's not get all doom and gloom here though, let's spin the table around and think of it this way:

A) I think Murray said what he said, in the way he did ON PURPOSE. I think it was a little "wake up" call to Volchenkov and moreso his agent. A little reminder that "Hey, we've not nothing signed here and the trade deadline is 2 days away. Do you want the possibility here of being traded off a playoff team?"

B) I don't think Murray will trade him. And I wouldn't either. Why? We need D-men and we'd have to get at least roster 3 d-men back in return (or 2 "top four" roster d-men) which is unlikely. What team is going to trade away 2-3 roster d-men for a UFA rental player?

C) UFAs (without no-trade clauses) are often seen as the "rental player" at trade deadline. The Senators are having a good run right now and will make the playoffs. Think of it this way - we can have a free rental player in Volchenkov and we don't have to give up anything to get him!

D) I believe Vochenkov wants to stay. I believe he's willing to take a little less to stay. He probably is relying heavily on his agent for the contract negotiations. Any agent will want to get the maximum contract so they'll get their best cut.

@Abu

The Senators need Richard Park

Do it, bring in park. I love that dude.

what's the cut of point for volchenkov's salary? i agree with ken holland's philosophy - detroit always pay more for their offensive defenceman than defensive ones.

it is definitely harder to create than destroy

here's the free agent UFAs
