tigerdirect.ca is good. I personally wouldn't build my own laptop. They are next to impossible to assemble yourself and the cost of them assembling it for you plus buying parts on their own will end up not worth it. I suggest just buying one from Futureshop. Samsung doesn't make many but the ones they do make are very good. Building your desktop however can be a wicked good time.

So I've been window shopping online and at FutureS/BestB/Business Depot, etc. and I am aware of the price ranges and what you get for them...
I've narrowed it down to three models: a nice deal on a Gateway, an Acer or a Toshiba (my current laptop brand).
But I still can't decide and am a little unsure of the CPUs - Intel i3, Intel Dual Core II, AMD Athlon II, AMD Turion???? Which ones are better?
Any thoughts?
I mainly care about the RAM (4 gigs minimum) and the CPU...

Remember, 4GB RAM is only good if the OS is 64-bit... otherwise no point going above 3GB with 32-bit

Windows 7 (which comes with all the laptops out there) is 64 bit, no?
Tank Dawg
There are different versions :)
most likely you are getting 32-bit (most common).

I recently just got an Acer at FutureShop. AMD, 64 bit, Windows 7, 3GB and it was on sale for $399. Very happy with it.

If it doesn't come with the 64 bit version just pirate it. As for CPU, I'm an Intel guy. Whichever has the higher speed (GHZ number) will be the faster computer. RAM is great but right now anything over 4 GIGs is overkill but could be useful for later. My prefered brand out of the three you listed is Toshiba. I find they have good CPU Ram and Hard drives mostly. They lack a bit on the video cards but that's why they offer such good Ram and CPU for affordable prices.

Thanks for the info guys - great points.
I was planning on getting the new laptop this weekend but I tore ligaments in my ankle and I am pretty much immobilized for a while ... :(
Still not completely sold on Win7 but it'll be on the new laptop for sure.
The laptops with Intel i3 are going for like 500, Intel i5 7-800, Intel i7 900+.... Tempted to get the cheaper models, like Systine did - if it does the job why the hell not? But on the other hand I kind of want to get something that will last for the next 4-5 years.

It all depends on what you're using it for. The cheaper models will not be good for gaming but for office work and school work they will do the trick just fine.
Sensfanatic
Yep, I agree Sensfanatic. I just use it for MS Office, surfing, music and photos. I was going to just get a netbook but for the price I got the laptop for I jumped at it.... kind of wish I bought 2 now.

What is a good website where I could build a laptop/buy a laptop part by part (i.e. cheaper)?
Any suggestions?
